Amphibians
Amphibians
are vertebrates that live both on the land and in the
water. They are ectothermic (also called cold-blooded) meaning
that they cannot regulate their own body temperature. An
Amphibian's body temperature fluctuates according to its
surroundings. They also have
moist skin, webbed feet, and lay eggs. At various stages of
development, they breathe through gills and then lungs.
Examples: salamanders, frogs, and newts.

than vertebrates, but they are great in numbers! It is estimated
that 97 percent of all animals alive today are invertebrates.

Mammals Mammals
are animals which form the Mammalia class. Their defining features include
animals that: -
breathe air;
- are warm-blooded - the same temperature no matter what their
environment;
- have a backbone;
- grow fur or body hair at some point in their lives;
- females produce milk for them in mammary glands;
- Note: MOST mammals have teeth with the exception of the ant
eater.
- Note: MOST mammals bear live young. Mammals
live in all sorts of environments - on land, underground or in the
ocean. Cats, cows, elephants, and even whales are all mammals!
Some mammals such as bats can fly! Mammals
are further divided into three different types depending on how they give
birth and look after their young: -
Live birth mammals - Those to whom babies are born alive:
- Marsupials - Mammals that carry their young in a pouch.
Think of the kangaroo, koala and opossum.|
- Egg laying - There are special mammals called monotremes that lay
eggs. These are the Duckbilled Platypus and the Long-nosed Spiny
Anteater.
