Homes that are dug into the ground are called "burrows" or "dens".  These may be shallow or deep.  Burrows provide shelter from the sun and the cold of winter.  They also provide protection from larger predators for foxes, gophers, prairie dogs, squirrels, moles and rabbits.  A suitable spot under logs, rocks or bushes adds camouflage for the entrance.  Burrows are often made up of many tunnels and living quarters that connect to many entrance and exit holes.

This chipmunk needs a lesson on camouflage.  The tell-tale signs of eaten pine cones is drawing attention to his burrow's entrance way.

Evidence of new burrowing is apparent in a soft gravel road.  By the end of the day, this pathway will have been crushed  by passing cars, only to be rebuilt by the next morning.  Since there are so many in the area, this is most likely the work of a chipmunk.

Rabbits often dig out burrows that are only half in the ground.  Here a doe dug out an indentation that was about 7 inches deep and 8-10 inches wide.  She chose a well-protected spot under a roof overhang, protected on one side by a warm brick wall and surrounded on the other sides by the sharp thorns of rose bushes. The burrow was lined with rabbit fur which a doe pulls prior to kindling (giving birth to baby rabbits called "kits") and grass.

After the kits were born, the doe covered them with more fur and grass.  This burrow was so well hidden that I didn't see it and was only alerted to it by my dog's keen sense of smell.
