The act of "nesting" is a strong instinct given to both man and beast.  During spring, one can find many species of animal building nests of all types.  The purpose of a building a nest is to provide a place in which an animal lays their eggs or gives birth, and subsequently raises their young.

Some nests are designed to hide eggs from predators or the elements, while others to help with incubation periods.

Nests are usually made of organic materials found in the habitat of an animal.  Materials such as twigs, mud, grass, leaves, etc. are used with each species making its own kind of nest.  Alligators, for example, build large raised nests composed of decaying plant material and mud about the waterline.  Turtles bury their eggs under the ground in nests dug out of soft sand and leave their eggs to incubate in the warmth of the sun.

Nesting in trees is very common and by far, bird species use the safety of height most often. Birds are skillful nest builders and use many types of materials available to them.   Some build "mounds" in which to lay their eggs; some build nests that adhere to surfaces like walls, cliffs or ledges; some build pendant nests that look like bags that hang from tree branches.  Large birds like storks like to build platform nests in trees, although I saw one built on the top of a telephone pole as well.  Sometimes humans leave out materials such as tissues, string, or brushed dog hair for birds to use as nesting materials. Humans have also helped out animals by building animals homes like bat and bird houses.

Double-crested Cormorants, also called "shags", are coastal birds that often colonize inland waters.  These birds made their nests in the tropical pine trees in Florida's wetlands.  Built from twigs, the nests don't appear very sturdy but seem to have sufficed for the three large offspring.

Black-crowned Night-heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)

The male of the Black-crowned Night-heron begins to build a nest that is a platform made of sticks, twigs and other woody vegetation that it finds on the ground.

Once he has found a mate, the nest building is passed to the female.  The male continues to find the materials, but now passes sticks to the female who places them according to her liking.

Black-crowned Night-heron nests are about 12-18 inches across and about 8-12 inches high although those pictured below look to be quite a bit larger.
