Ailuropoda melanoleuca is the scientific name for Giant Panda.  It means "Cat-footed, black and white animal".

As part of a long-term conservation partnership between China and Canada, China has loaned two giant pandas to two Canadian zoos for a period of ten years (2013 - 2018).  The images below are of Er Shun (the female) and Da Mao (male) as they live at the Toronto Zoo.

Giant Pandas live in the Bamboo forests in a few mountain ranges in China.  They are a critically endangered species with only 1,600 left in the wild and as at 2014, 300 live in zoos and breeding centers around the world.

Giant Pandas have adapted to their life in bamboo forests.  While classified as a carnivore in the bear family, 99% of their diet is bamboo.  The other 1% is made up of grasses, herbs and the occasional small animal.  Because they are a carnivore, Giant Pandas don't have the digestive systems needed to digest the bamboo very well.  In order to get enough nutrients, they have to eat huge amounts of bamboo daily - about 12 - 38 kg a day!

The stomach walls of Panda Bears are very muscular to help digest their woody diet.  Their gut has a thick layer of mucus that protects against splinters.

Did you know...

that there are several varieties of bamboo plants?  While Giant Pandas are able to eat 25 different kinds of bamboo, they usually eat only the four or five that grow in their home range.

Giant Panda's are solitary in the wild, coming together only once a year to mate.

Do Panda's hibernate?

No, but they find shelter temporarily in hollow trees, rock caves and crevices during the winter.

Did you know...

that although they look very cute and cuddly, Giant Pandas are just as dangerous as other bears.

Pandas in the wild spend about 10-16 hours a day foraging and eating food.  The Pandas need to rest and sleep a lot each day in order to conserve their energy so that they may digest the bamboo and get as many nutrients as possible from their bamboo diet.

We Are All God's
Creatures

"If all the beasts
were gone,
 men would die from
a great loneliness
of spirit,
for whatever happens
to the beasts
also happens to the man.
All things are connected.  Whatever befalls
the Earth
befalls the sons
of the Earth."

~ Chief Seattle
of the Suquamish Tribe,
 letter to
President
Franklin Pierce ~

"Life is as dear
to a mute creature
as it is to man.
Just as one wants happiness
and fears pain,
just as one wants
to live
and not die,
so do other creatures."

~ His Holiness
The Dalai Lama ~

"If you have men
who will exclude
any of God's creatures
from the shelter
of compassion and pity,
you will have men
who will deal likewise
with their fellow men."

~ St. Francis of Assisi ~

"The worst sin
towards our fellow creatures
is not to hate them,
but to be indifferent to them.  that's the essence
of inhumanity."

~ George Bernard
Shaw ~

"A bird does not sing
because it has an answer.
 It sings because
it has a song."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
