beaver head eyes nose ears toronto zooThe North American Beaver  (Castor canadensis) is Canadas national animal.  It is a semi-aquatic rodent who is active primarily at night.  It builds dams to raise the water level of rivers, streams and creeks in order to create a lake and then builds its lodge (as its home) in the deep water.

Beaver ponds are excellent for the surrounding animal habitat since they provide shelter for birds that would otherwise not inhabit these areas as well as the growth of water-loving plants that thrive in and around the pond.  The beavers population is on the decline because often their building  interferes with the human population.  Its building habit results in the harvesting of trees and the flooding of land used by humans for roads.

Although usually active at night, this busy beaver was hard at work in the middle of the day.  I saw him often swimming about the center and edges of the lake.

We Are All God's
Creatures

"If all the beasts
were gone,
 men would die from
a great loneliness
of spirit,
for whatever happens
to the beasts
also happens to the man.
All things are connected.  Whatever befalls
the Earth
befalls the sons
of the Earth."

~ Chief Seattle
of the Suquamish Tribe,
 letter to
President
Franklin Pierce ~

"Life is as dear
to a mute creature
as it is to man.
Just as one wants happiness
and fears pain,
just as one wants
to live
and not die,
so do other creatures."

~ His Holiness
The Dalai Lama ~

"If you have men
who will exclude
any of God's creatures
from the shelter
of compassion and pity,
you will have men
who will deal likewise
with their fellow men."

~ St. Francis of Assisi ~

"The worst sin
towards our fellow creatures
is not to hate them,
but to be indifferent to them.  that's the essence
of inhumanity."

~ George Bernard
Shaw ~

"A bird does not sing
because it has an answer.
 It sings because
it has a song."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
