Muraenidae are commonly known as "Moray Eels".  There are about 200 species of eel within 15 genera.  The smallest species has a maximum length of 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) and the longest can reach lengths of 13 feet (4 m).

Green eel pngUnlike fish that have several fins, eels have one dorsal fin that runs the entire length of their bodies resulting in a snake-like appearance.  Although they do indeed look like snakes, Moray Eels, as well as other eel species, are in fact fish and not reptiles.  Found in deep and shallow waters, they use their strong sense of smell and lay waiting to ambush their prey.

Did you know...

that Moray Eels have two sets of jaws?  The second set of jaws grasps their prey and moves it toward the back of the throat into its digestive system.

The Moray Eel is a secretive, carnivorous animal and spends most of its time hiding in crevices awaiting its prey.  Just like fish, Moray eels spawn - eggs are fertilized outside of the body like fish.

Fun Fish Facts

- Catfish have over 27,000 taste buds while humans have only 7,000.

- Sharks are the only fish that have eyelids.

- As a fish grows, the number of its scales does not increase.  Instead, each scale increases in size.  You can determine the age of a fish by the number of growth rings on the scales.

- Most fish have air bladders that help to keep them afloat.  Sharks don't have them and must either swim continually or rest on the bottom of the ocean.

Did you know...

that a fish can drown?  Since fish need oxygen just like we do, if there isn't enough oxygen in the water, they will drown.
