Jellyfish are composed of a non-living jelly-like substance.  They are part of the Cnidaria phylum.  Easy to identify, these marine animals have a gelatinous umbrella shape with trailing tentacles.  Some jellyfish are clear, but others can be found in a multitude of vibrant colours.

Since jellyfish are not true fish (vertebrates), the term "jellies" or "seajellies" are being used more and more often.

The body cavity  is used for breathing and digestion and moves in a pulsing fashion to maneuver the jellyfish.  Stinging tentacles are used to capture prey.

Jellyfish move about by squirting water from their mouths.  This propels them forward.

Fun Fish Facts

- Catfish have over 27,000 taste buds while humans have only 7,000.

- Sharks are the only fish that have eyelids.

- As a fish grows, the number of its scales does not increase.  Instead, each scale increases in size.  You can determine the age of a fish by the number of growth rings on the scales.

- Most fish have air bladders that help to keep them afloat.  Sharks don't have them and must either swim continually or rest on the bottom of the ocean.

Did you know...

that a fish can drown?  Since fish need oxygen just like we do, if there isn't enough oxygen in the water, they will drown.
