The Pygmy Hippos are located in the African Savanna Section of the Toronto Zoo.

Hippopotamus amphibius is commonly known as the River Hippopotamus, hippo for short. It is a mostly herbivorous mammal that lives in lakes, rivers and ponds and is native to Africa.  The name comes from Greek meaning "river horse".  Gregarious creatures, they live in herds or "pods" of as many as 30.

  Did you know...

that the River Hippopotamus is the 3rd largest land mammal after the elephant and the white rhino?

A hippo's lifespan is typically 40-50 years.  The two sisters photographed here at the Toronto Zoo are in their mid twenties (as at 2014).  They were anxiously awaiting their treats of carrots, cantaloupe and their favourite - watermelon.

Hippos can weigh up to 2,900 lbs for females and 3,300 for males.  Don't let their stocky appearance fool you, for a hippo can easily outrun a human being and reach speeds of 30 km/h (19 mph).  It is considered a very aggressive and unpredictable animal.

Although the body appears as having just a heavy skin with many folds, if you look closely, you will see fine short hairs.  A hippo's skin has a layer of fat up to five cm thick.  The skin emits moisture that has a red pigment which is called "blood sweat".

A River Hippo has a hinged jaw that can open 180 degrees!  Notice the enormous teeth which sharpen themselves as they grind together.  The canine and incisor teeth are used solely for combat.

We Are All God's
Creatures

"If all the beasts
were gone,
 men would die from
a great loneliness
of spirit,
for whatever happens
to the beasts
also happens to the man.
All things are connected.  Whatever befalls
the Earth
befalls the sons
of the Earth."

~ Chief Seattle
of the Suquamish Tribe,
 letter to
President
Franklin Pierce ~

"Life is as dear
to a mute creature
as it is to man.
Just as one wants happiness
and fears pain,
just as one wants
to live
and not die,
so do other creatures."

~ His Holiness
The Dalai Lama ~

"If you have men
who will exclude
any of God's creatures
from the shelter
of compassion and pity,
you will have men
who will deal likewise
with their fellow men."

~ St. Francis of Assisi ~

"The worst sin
towards our fellow creatures
is not to hate them,
but to be indifferent to them.  that's the essence
of inhumanity."

~ George Bernard
Shaw ~

"A bird does not sing
because it has an answer.
 It sings because
it has a song."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
