The Ring-tailed Lemurs are located in the African Rainforest Section of the Toronto Zoo.

Lemur catta is commonly known as the Ring-Tailed Lemur and is a suborder of primates.  It is easy to spot where their name comes from, for this species has a distinct ring-like pattern on its tail.  The Ring-Tailed Lemur is native to Madagascar and is locally known in Malagasy as "Maky".

An average Ring-Tailed Lemur weighs about 6-8 pounds and is about 15-18 inches tall.  It looks at times like their behinds are sticking up in the air, but this is because their hind legs are longer than their front legs.

Want to know more, why not visit the Toronto Zoo’s website and
read all about Ring-Tailed Lemurs  here.

Did you know...

that the tail of the Ring-Tailed Lemur always ends with a black tip?  Although their tails are longer than their entire body, the tail is of no use in climbing or clinging to trees.

Ring-Tailed Lemurs are very social animals living in troops of up to 30 individuals. Lemur troops are led by a female lemur.  While females stay in the same troop into which they were born, male lemurs move from one troop to another.

Did you know...

that in order to keep warm and keep social bonds, groups will often huddle together.

We Are All God's
Creatures

"If all the beasts
were gone,
 men would die from
a great loneliness
of spirit,
for whatever happens
to the beasts
also happens to the man.
All things are connected.  Whatever befalls
the Earth
befalls the sons
of the Earth."

~ Chief Seattle
of the Suquamish Tribe,
 letter to
President
Franklin Pierce ~

"Life is as dear
to a mute creature
as it is to man.
Just as one wants happiness
and fears pain,
just as one wants
to live
and not die,
so do other creatures."

~ His Holiness
The Dalai Lama ~

"If you have men
who will exclude
any of God's creatures
from the shelter
of compassion and pity,
you will have men
who will deal likewise
with their fellow men."

~ St. Francis of Assisi ~

"The worst sin
towards our fellow creatures
is not to hate them,
but to be indifferent to them.  that's the essence
of inhumanity."

~ George Bernard
Shaw ~

"A bird does not sing
because it has an answer.
 It sings because
it has a song."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
