The term "big cat" is not a scientific definition.  It is term used to describe a group of large species of wild cats.  Although there are many such species, there are a select few that are part of the "big cat" club some of which include Cheetahs, Cougars, Jaguars, Leopards, Lions, and Tigers.  All big cats are carnivores and "apex predators".  Apex predators are those animals at the top of the food chain with no predators of their own - not including man of course.

Did you know...

that only Jaguars, Leopards, Lions and Tigers can roar?  These are the members of the genus "Panthera".

African Lion

Panthero leo is commonly known as the African Lion.  This is the only cat species where males and females can easily be distinguished.  Males have manes and females don't.

Lions are very social creatures and live in groups of up to 30 individuals called "prides".

See those dark spots on the lion's muzzle, these are unique to each individual cat and can be used to identify lions like fingerprints in humans.

Who gathers the food?

Unlike other cats, lions hunt in groups, but despite the fact that they are significantly smaller than the males, it is the females (lionesses) who do the hunting!

Lions have 30 teeth.  The canines, four large pointed teeth, are used to hold prey, kill it and tear it apart.  Four teeth in the cheeks called carnassial teeth are for cutting through the prey's tough skin and tendons.  Since lions do not have teeth good for chewing, they swallow their food in chunks.

You can read more about the African Lion at the Toronto Zoo's website here.

White Lion

Lions are often called the "King of Beasts".

The rare White Lions [Panthera leo krugeri]  found at the Toronto Zoo are from the Timbavati region of South Africa.  They are white because of a recessive gene known as a colour inhibitor that is endemic to the Timbavati region of South Africa and Southern Kruger Park.

Unlike other cats, lions hunt in groups and the females do the hunting!  Males defend their territory which may be as big as 100 square miles!  It's easy to tell a male from a female, since only males have a mane.  Lions are very social and the only cats that live together in groups called "prides".  They are also the only cat that has a tuft of hair at the end of their tail.

We Are All God's
Creatures

"If all the beasts
were gone,
 men would die from
a great loneliness
of spirit,
for whatever happens
to the beasts
also happens to the man.
All things are connected.  Whatever befalls
the Earth
befalls the sons
of the Earth."

~ Chief Seattle
of the Suquamish Tribe,
 letter to
President
Franklin Pierce ~

"Life is as dear
to a mute creature
as it is to man.
Just as one wants happiness
and fears pain,
just as one wants
to live
and not die,
so do other creatures."

~ His Holiness
The Dalai Lama ~

"If you have men
who will exclude
any of God's creatures
from the shelter
of compassion and pity,
you will have men
who will deal likewise
with their fellow men."

~ St. Francis of Assisi ~

"The worst sin
towards our fellow creatures
is not to hate them,
but to be indifferent to them.  that's the essence
of inhumanity."

~ George Bernard
Shaw ~

"A bird does not sing
because it has an answer.
 It sings because
it has a song."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
