The American Moose (Alces americanus) is the largest member of the deer family.  Easily identified, moose have large, heavy bodies with long legs.  Their fur  is a very dark brown colour.  The males of the species grow large antlers that can spread over six feet in width in the spring, shedding them in winter.

Moose are solitary animals that are most active during the dawn and dusk.  They are very territorial and will defend their territory from both animals and humans.

Did you know...

that male moose grow the largest antlers in all of the animal kingdom?

Did you know...

- that the flap of skin that hangs from the throat of a moose is called a "dewlap" or "bell flows"?
- that a moose' body is buoyant and they are very good swimmers?
- that moose can dive as deep as 20 feet?

Moose have hooves that are able to support their heavy body weight as they walk through marshes, mud, water and snow.  They act somewhat like snowshoes to distribute their weight evenly.  Moose will use their hooves to scrape away snow during the winter to eat moss and lichens.

Moose are also excellent swimmers and runners.  They can run at a speed of 20 miles per hour for a long distance and are capable of quick 35 mph bursts.

We Are All God's
Creatures

"If all the beasts
were gone,
 men would die from
a great loneliness
of spirit,
for whatever happens
to the beasts
also happens to the man.
All things are connected.  Whatever befalls
the Earth
befalls the sons
of the Earth."

~ Chief Seattle
of the Suquamish Tribe,
 letter to
President
Franklin Pierce ~

"Life is as dear
to a mute creature
as it is to man.
Just as one wants happiness
and fears pain,
just as one wants
to live
and not die,
so do other creatures."

~ His Holiness
The Dalai Lama ~

"If you have men
who will exclude
any of God's creatures
from the shelter
of compassion and pity,
you will have men
who will deal likewise
with their fellow men."

~ St. Francis of Assisi ~

"The worst sin
towards our fellow creatures
is not to hate them,
but to be indifferent to them.  that's the essence
of inhumanity."

~ George Bernard
Shaw ~

"A bird does not sing
because it has an answer.
 It sings because
it has a song."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
