What's the difference between a rabbit and a hare?

Rabbits are born blind and hairless.  This is known as being "altricial".  Hares, however, are "precocial" which means that they are born with both vision and hair.  While rabbits live under the ground, hares live in nests about the ground.  Rabbits have been domesticated and are kept as pets or raised for meat.  Hares, have longer ears and hind legs.  They are also larger than rabbits.

Rabbits -

Rabbits are small mammals in the Leporidae Family that in nature live in open spaces.  There are many species of rabbit and the Order that they belong to - Lagomorpha - also includes pikas and hares.

Rabbits live in fields and meadows but can easily adapt to other habitats.   Their  favourite foods include anything from your garden and especially lettuce.  In the winter, they forage for bark, twigs and buds.

Rabbits mature quickly and breed three or four times each year.  Let's do some math.... if an average litter contains three to eight young, then four litters could produce 32 new bunnies in a year.  Let's next add the fact that baby bunnies grow quickly.  They are self-sufficient in about 4-5 weeks and are sexually mature in 2-3 months.  During this same year, each of those baby bunnies are now having their own litters.  Can you see how rabbit populations can soar in a very short time!

This is one of the Eastern Cottontail Rabbits that live in my urban backyard.  It is the most common species found in Ontario.  This one nests in a shallow depression under a large cedar bush in my front yard.  She has grown quite bold and is somewhat unafraid of people  Whenever I come upon her, she freezes in place thinking that I can't see her.  When she does dart away, she does so at a very fast speed.  Rabbits and hares can reach speeds of 60 to 75 kilometres per hour.

We Are All God's
Creatures

"If all the beasts
were gone,
 men would die from
a great loneliness
of spirit,
for whatever happens
to the beasts
also happens to the man.
All things are connected.  Whatever befalls
the Earth
befalls the sons
of the Earth."

~ Chief Seattle
of the Suquamish Tribe,
 letter to
President
Franklin Pierce ~

"Life is as dear
to a mute creature
as it is to man.
Just as one wants happiness
and fears pain,
just as one wants
to live
and not die,
so do other creatures."

~ His Holiness
The Dalai Lama ~

"If you have men
who will exclude
any of God's creatures
from the shelter
of compassion and pity,
you will have men
who will deal likewise
with their fellow men."

~ St. Francis of Assisi ~

"The worst sin
towards our fellow creatures
is not to hate them,
but to be indifferent to them.  that's the essence
of inhumanity."

~ George Bernard
Shaw ~

"A bird does not sing
because it has an answer.
 It sings because
it has a song."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
