Snails and Slugs are gastropods and account for 80% of all molluscs. The name “snail” is usually used to describe members of the Molluscan class Gastropoda and are therefore also called “molluscs” or “gastropods”.  They typically have shells that are large enough for the animal to retract into. however, snails can also apply to many thousands of species of sea or freshwater snails.

Animals that look like snails but lack a shell are called “slugs”.  Land snails that have a shell so small that the animal cannot retract into it are called “semislugs”.

Both snails and slugs have soft, unsegmented bodies that are 2 to 4 cm in length.  The head has one or two pairs of tentacles.  While the front tentacles are sensitive to scents and sometimes taste, each of the back larger tentacles have an eye at the end.

Did you know…

that the slimy trail left behind by a snail or slug is made up of mucous?  Gastropods make this mucous in order to be able to move along on the ground.  It protects them from sharp objects and helps their bodies from losing moisture.

Did you also know...

that since snails and slugs eat up to 40 percent of their weight in a day, they can do a lot of damage to vegetation, including crops!  A lot of chemicals or salt are used by gardeners who want to destroy and keep away slugs from their gardens.  These chemicals work to kill the gastropod by drying out its body.

Finally, did you know…

that in many parts of the world, eating a certain type of land snail is considered a delicacy?  In France, and in fancy restaurants, look on the menu for the French name for snail, “Escargot”.

As a snail grows, its home grows with it!  New coils are added as the snail grows bigger.  Similar to counting the rings of a tree to determine growth, so too can we count the rings of a snail's shell to determine age.  The development of a snail's shell is the result of a process called torsion.  Species of snails can be distinguished based on the direction they are coiled - right-handed (dextral) versus left-handed (sinistral).  This is a fascinating topic and you can read more about this at:  The Living World of Molluscs  (Clicking here will take you outside of FreeTiiuPix webpages.)
