Architecture
comes from the Greek word "arkhitekton" meaning
"architect" or specifically "master
builder". It is the process and the product of
planning, designing and constructing a physical structure like a
building. When structures are built, the designer must take
into account functional, technical, social, environmental and
aesthetic considerations.

The campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the
Italian city of Pisa, known worldwide for its unintended
tilt. Built 1173.
Architectural
designs reflect a society's values, practical needs and
culture. Think of the mighty pyramids built to express the
greatness of a ruler. Think of societies building
ever higher and more daring structures. Who people are
reflect what they build. Think of historic buildings around
you - or the lack thereof - they are a kind of documentation of
political, economic, religious and social states. Buildings
demonstrate how far a society has succeeded in mastering the
materials available to them to build.
Historically,
building evolved out of the dynamics between needs - shelter,
security, worship - and building materials and skills
available. Thereafter, building became a "craft"
which is a formalization of tradition and practice.

Architecture
Architecture
is the process and product achieved - a building or a
structure - through plan, design & construction.

"There
are three forms
of visual art:
Painting is art to look at, sculpture is art you can
walk around,
and architecture
is art you can walk through."
~
Dan Rice
1823 - 1900 ~
