Much to my dismay, climbing all over my garden lilies I found a multitude of Scarlet Lily Beetles.  Lilioceris lilii is also commonly known as the "Red Lily Beetle" or "Lily Leaf Beetle".  This beetle has an appetite for the leaves, stems, buds and flowers of lilies, fritillaries and other members of the family Liliaceae.  After munching, it will also lay its eggs on the Lilium and Fritallaria plant species.

As can be seen from its damage, the Scarlet Lily Beetle is considered a pest where lilies are cultivated.  It chewed holes into my plant's leaves, flowers and stem leaving unopened buds cut and fallen.

The adult beetle is about 6 - 9 mm in length, with long legs and antennae.  It's hard forewings are a bright shiny scarlet.  The underside of this bug is all black.  Easily confused with the Cardinal Beetle [Pyrochroa serraticornis], the Lily Beetle's wing cases are dimpled and more rounded.

Are You Baffled
by Bugs ?

Did you know...

That all insects are bugs, but not all bugs are insects!

"I dreamed
 I was a butterfly,
 flitting around
in the sky;
then I awoke.
Now I wonder:
Am I a man
who dreamt
of being a butterfly,
or am I a butterfly
dreaming
that I am a man?"

~ Chuang Tse ~
Chinese philosopher
