The Chalk-fronted Corporal, Ladona julia, is a skimmer dragonfly which is found in the northern United States and southern Canada .  This species is typically larger than other corporals.  Just like this one pictured, it can usually be found perching on the ground or on a flat surface.

Young Chalk-fronted Corporals are reddish brown with white shoulder stripes and a black stripe down the middle of the abdomen.  As they mature, the males develop a white pruinescence on the top of their thorax and at the base of the abdomen.  The rest of the abdomen turns black.  Females become dark brown with just a dusting of gray pruinescence near the base of the abdomen.

Note:  Pruinescense or pruinosity is a a "bloom" that occurs on plants or animals that causes a fine powder on the surface of the plant or animal that is sometimes described as looking like "frost".  Pruinose is the adjective meaning in botany to be coated with a powdery or waxy bloom.

Are You Baffled
by Bugs ?

Did you know...

That all insects are bugs, but not all bugs are insects!

"I dreamed
 I was a butterfly,
 flitting around
in the sky;
then I awoke.
Now I wonder:
Am I a man
who dreamt
of being a butterfly,
or am I a butterfly
dreaming
that I am a man?"

~ Chuang Tse ~
Chinese philosopher

Insects have 3 body parts:  a head, thorax and abdomen.  They also have six legs and two antennae.

Spiders and Scorpions have eight legs and are not considered insects!

According to some sources, the total number of insect species is somewhere between 15 and 30 million!
