►What are the various types of bakery items? Pastry - is a stiff dough that is folded and enriched with fat - usually butter. They can be filled with sweet or savory ingredients. Pastries are higher in fat content than other types of baked goods. Croissants fall into the pastry category as do danishes. Cake - is a bread-like sweet baked dessert. They may be airy and fluffy like a sponge cake, or heavy like a cheesecake. Torte - is a sweet cake that is filled with jams, fruits, spreads, butter cream or mousse. It has many layers. Loaf - may be a cake or a bread that is baked in a rounded shape or in an oblong pan. One typically thinks of a "loaf" of bread. Pie - is a baked dish usually made of pastry dough that is filled with sweet or savory ingredients. There may or may not be a top crust. A pie is usually thought of as a dessert item such as cherry, apple crumble, or pumpkin, although, technically, an egg quiche is also a pie.
