Did you know...

that there are almost 10,000 species of birds?

Birds are winged, bipedial, endothermic (warm-blooded), egg-laying, vertebrate animals.  Birds are the only type of animal that have feathers and all birds have feathers.  The feathers overlap on their wings and tail allowing them to catch, hold air and fly.

A good way to attract birds to your yard is by providing a bird feeder.  Different birds like different seeds, so be sure to learn what will attract the species you want.

Moorhen

A Moorhen is easily recognized by its small black body and (usually) red, pointed beak.  There are seven different species of this bird.

Although the Moorhen I spotted was walking atop floating vegetation in the Florida everglades, this species can be found from Canada to Chile, from northern Europe to south Africa, and across Asia to the Pacific.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a great site
where you can hear what various birds sound like.  (Linked with permission)

Peacock

Peacocks are actually pheasants and part of the Phasianidae family and known as Peafowl.  The male peacock is one of the most colourfully adorned animals on Earth. While its body is iridescent blue and green , the tail feathers have an "eye" of blue, gold, red and yellow.  The tail is spread in display and used in courtship rituals.  Apparently the female peafowl is attracted to the brightest and biggest of displays.

Did you know...

that only males are called "peacocks"?  The correct name for females is "peahen".  Males and females together are called "peafowl" and chicks are named "peachicks".

Beautiful Birds

"The reason birds can fly
and we can't
is simply because
they have perfect faith,
for to have faith
is to have wings."
