Ardea Alba - The Great Egret

The Great Egret is also known as the Great White Egret, the Common Egret, the large Egret or a Great White Heron?  Like the Heron, it is part of the Ardeidae family.  It is found in wetland areas from southern Canada southward toward Argentina and across Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Only slightly smaller than the Great Blue Heron, the Great Egret has all white plumage.

  Did you know....

that you can tell the Great Egret apart from other egrets by its yellow bill and black legs?

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a great site
where you can hear what various birds sound like. (Linked with permission)

calls between several Egrets.

  Did you know....

that many of these beautiful birds were killed around the end of the 19th century?  Their feathers were used to decorate hats that were in fashion at the time.  North American populations were killed off by 95 percent!

During peak demand for Egret plumes, one ounce of plumes was worth more than an ounce of gold.

In fact, the currently well-known Audubon Society was formed in 1886 just to stop the destruction of bird populations in the name of fashion.
