Bonasa umbellus - Ruffed Grouse

Commonly known as the Ruffed Grouse, the Bonasa umbellus is sometimes referred to as a partridge, which is technically incorrect.  The grouse is a medium-sized, non-migratory woodland bird and not normally found in open areas.

There are both the grey and brown varieties or "morphs".  The Grey has a grey/brown coloured back, neck and head with a pale breast and white underside.  The Brown variety has plumage that is almost entirely brown.

The Ruffed Grouse has its own special courtship display, unlike that of other grouse species.  The Ruffed Grouse makes no vocal sounds, but rather beats its wings rapidly making a thump...thump...thump... sound.  The sound can be heard for about a quarter mile or more.

Did you know...   that the Ruffed Grouse is the state bird of Pennsylvania, USA?

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a great site
where you can hear what various birds sound like.  (Linked with permission)

"The reason birds can fly
and we can't
is simply because
they have perfect faith,
for to have faith
is to have wings."
