Amazona leucocephala -
Rose-throated Amazon Parrot

Amazona leucocephala is commonly known as the "Cuban Parrot, Cuban Amazon, Grand Cayman Parrot, Cayman Brac Parrot. Bahama/Abaco Parrot, White-headed Amazon Parrot" or "Rose-throated Parrot".  It is found in woodlands and forests of Cuba, the Bahamas and Cayman Islands in the Caribbean.

This species of bird is about 28-33 cm long and is mainly green with some blue feathers in its wings.  The lower face, chin and throat are rosy pink and its forehead and eye-rings are white.

The bird's diet consists of fruits and seeds.  The birds prefer dry forests, palm groves, mangroves, plantations and agricultural areas.

A. leucocephala are on the international and U.S. federal endangered species lists.

Five subspecies are differentiated by how dark the green plumage is, amount of white covering the crown and forehead as well as the extent of red on the throat and abdomen.

Myipsitta monachus - Monk Parakeets

The Monk Parakeet is also known as the "Quaker Parrot"Feral parakeets (those born in the wild) live mainly in North America and Europe.

These birds can easily adapt to living in urban areas.  The ones photographed below all lived in a park in old downtown San Juan, Puerto Rico.  They chattered in the trees, groomed and fought with each other and enjoyed bathing in the pools left from a recent rain.

Did you know...

it's a good that they can tell the difference, because the only way we humans know if a bird is a boy Monk Parakeet or a girl Monk Parakeet is through feather or DNA blood testing!

Macaws

The term Macaw refers to both small and large parrots.  In the parrot family, six are classified as macaws.  Usually having large, dark beaks, they come in a large variety of beautiful colours.  Macaws are very intelligent social animals that live in the wild in groups of 10 or more.  Unfortunately, these  brilliantly blumed birds are often trapped illegally and sold as pets. Some species can mimic human speech. The rain forests where many species live are also quickly disappearing.

Did you know...

that like other parrots, their first and fourth toes point backwards?

Did you also know...

that typically Macaws mate for life?

Range:  Mexico, Central and South America
Class:  Aves
Order:  Psittaciformes
