Pigeons can be found all over the world.  Although smaller birds are sometimes called "doves", the two names are used interchangeably.  Young pigeons are called "squabs".  The most common species is the Rock Pigeon.

Did you know...

that  until World War II, homing pigeons were used to send military messages?  Pigeons have a wonderful talent for finding their way home and can fly very quickly over hundreds of miles.  Birds were taken away from their homes and when needed, messages were attached to the birds, who then flew home with the message.  Pigeon's didn't fly back and forth - they only flew home.  Messages were usually written on paper and attached to a small tube on the bird's leg.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a great site where you can hear
what various birds sound like.   (Linked with permission.)

Parque de las Palomas - Pigeon's Park

Located in the old city of San Juan, Puerto Rico,  is a cobblestone Park located at the end of Cristo Street.  The back wall of the park provides shelter to pigeons who nest in holes cut into the wall.  Beautiful large trees, whose trunks have twisted and intertwined, provide shade.  This is a favourite spot for visitors to come and feed the pigeons who live there.  There are benches on which to rest and enjoy the view of the city, but sit there only if you dare, for the pigeons are likely to do what they do best, and you may get "hit" with something white and sticky.

"The reason birds can fly
