Free images of Birds - Vultures

Note on large files:  Very large files may be bigger than your screen.
Right click on any portion of the image showing and chose "save as".

Scavenging birds of prey are also known as "vultures".  The term is divided into two groups:  The New World vultures which include the Californian and Andean condors; and the Old World vultures that scavenge the carcasses of dead animals on African plains.

Did you know...

that a group of vultures is called by different names depending upon what the vultures are doing?  If a group is in flight, they are called a "kettle".  If they are eating, they are known as a "wake".  If the vulture group is sitting in a tree, they are called "volts", "committees" or "venues".

Aegypius monachus - Cinereous Vulture

Aegypius monachus is commonly called the "Cinereous Vulture", but also known as the "Black Vulture, Monk Vulture" or "Eurasian Black Vulture".  It is a member of the Accipitridae family which also includes kites, buzzards and harriers. This species of vulture prefers semi-desert and grasslands.  Like other vultures, this species is a member of nature's clean-up crew.  It's keen eyesight locates its prey - the carcasses of large mammals.  The Cinereous Vulture is dominant over all other vulture species devouring its carcass using its sharp hooked bill to tear apart flesh.

Range:  Southern Europe east to southern China.

Status:  Near threatened.

Did you know...

that the Cinereous Vulture is one of the two largest Old World vultures? It is also believed to the largest true bird of prey in the world.  The vulture can be more than three feet in height and have a wingspan of up to ten feet.  Take note of the vulture's colouring.  It has dark brown feathers with a dull blue head, neck and bill.

Cathartes aura - Turkey Vulture

Cathartes aura is commonly known as a "Turkey Vulture, Turkey Buzzard" or just "Buzzard".

If you see a large bird soaring in the air with its wings in a "V" shape flying in wobbly circles, you are probably looking at a Turkey Vulture.

Looking black from a distances, up close, take note of their featherless red head and pale bills.

"The reason birds can fly  and we can't
is simply because
