A log cabin is a house that is built from logs.  Logs are laid horizontally forming the walls of the structure.  Spaces between the logs are filled with moss, wood chips and mud.  It is thought that this type of construction got its roots from Northern Europe.

Log cabins may have rounded logs, or squared logs with interlocking joints.

Did you know...

that the filling between the logs is called "chinking"?

Buildings erected by the Pilgrims in the 17th century were made of wood timbers with a thick thatched roof or clapboards.  Walls were made of wattle and daub -- interwoven sticks that were plastered with a mixture of clay, sand and straw.  The outside of each building had a sheathing of planks.
