Flowers - Fall Blooms Note
on large files: Very large files may be bigger than your

The stem of the plant is rough and hairy. Yellow, orange or reddish flowers are formed. Mature flowers are called "flower heads" which can grow to be very large. Sunflower heads are known as "composite flowers" since one head is made up of many florets or small flowers crowded together. The florets inside the head are "disc florets" and those mature into seeds while outer petal florets or "ray florets" are sterile. One flower head may produce hundreds of seeds. Did you know... that the flower petals within the flower head always grow in a spiral pattern? Remember the motion picture "The Da Vinci Code" and the mention of Fibonacci numbers, or numbers that followed a mathematical integer sequence. The flower head of a Sunflower is one such example where typically there are 34 spirals in one direction and 55 in the other. On a large specimen there could be 89 in one direction and 144 in the other. This type of pattern is the most efficient way of growing seeds in the flower head. Did you also know.... that the province of Manitoba in Canada has the best balanced soil fertility with a long, dry growing season, making it the best place in Canada to grow Sunflowers? Manitoba produces over 90 percent of Canada's total sunflower crop and this region is known as the "Manitoba Sunflower Belt". According to the Manitoba government, the province typically plants 150 - 200 thousands of sunflowers a year and harvests 250 million pounds of Sunflower seeds. The sunflowers produce either oil or are grown for snack foods or the baking industry.
