Anthurium is a genus of about 1000 species of flowering plants native to the steamy tropical rain forests of the Americas.  The plant has large waxy, almost plastic-looking petals with a "tail" in the middle.  The exotic blooms last for many, MANY weeks!  As house plants, this species does well in a sunny location with with high humidity (misting).

The outer portion of the bloom is called the "spathe" and is the collar or hood of the flower - it is actually a modified leaf.  The spathe may be red, yellow, rose, orange, green or white.  The spike in the middle or the tail-portion is called the "spadix" and consists of both male and female flowers.  Other common names include "Tail Flower, Flamingo Flower" and "Lacelea".  Another common name, for obvious reasons, is "Boy Flower".

Other members of the Araceae or Arum family include the Peace and Calla Lilies and the Jack-in-the-pulpit.

It should be noted that an Anthurium plant is poisonous with a level 3 toxicity if large amounts are consumed.

I have one Anthurium plant in my kitchen window which I inherited from my mother.  It was only when taking these photographs that I noticed what appeared to me to be an old and ugly spadix.  I've now read this to be quite a rarity - it is a spadix that has been pollinated and had produced seeds!

My mother dusted the leaves of this single plant frequently.  It has multiple blooms at various stages of maturity.  She must have inadvertently pollinated one spadix from another?

In any case, I've collected the seeds and will try my hand at propagating this plant.  Stay tuned regarding my success or lack thereof.
