Bladder Campion – Silene vulgaris (formerly Silene cucubalus) is part of the Pink Family (Caryophylaceae) and is described has a bladder-like flower with white petals.

This herbaceous perennial plant may grows to be about two feet tall, often branching at its base.  Stems and leaves are a light green colour without hairs.  Flowers have five white petals with deep clefts so that they may be mistaken as having ten petals.  Plants in flower tend to lean to one side due to the weight of the blooms.

The specimen below was in flower in mid-summer.  The blooming period lasts 1-2 months with flowers being replaced by an ovoid capsule containing small brown seeds.  This plant’s root system consists of a taproot with short rhizomes.

The bladder-like calyx is easy to recognize.  It is a network of veins and is often a dull pink colour.  This plant derived its name from early settlers who likened its calyx shape to the bladders of livestock.  The flower is particularly rampant and the photographs below are at its flowering stage.

"I wonder if
the Daffodil,
shrinks from the
touch of frost,
And when her veins
grow stiff & still,
She dreams
that life is lost?
Ah, if she does,
how sweet a thing
Her resurrection
day in spring!

~ Emma C. Dowd ~

feed also the soul."
