Note:   I am not an expert in the identification of plants and you should UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES rely
upon any of these images to identify edible, toxic or medicinal plants. If I have identified a plant
inaccurately,  please let me know so that the descriptions may be corrected.

Clintonia borealis is commonly known as "Blue-bead Lily, Blue-bead Clintonia, Clinton's Lily, Corn Lily, Cow Tongue, Yellow Beadlily, Yellow Bluebeadlily, Snakeberry, Dogberry" and "Straw Lily".  It is a perennial forest plant found in eastern North America.

This species grows from rhizomes and can reach heights of 50 cm.  The basal leaves are 2-5 cm wide and are shiny and narrowed at both ends, growing up to 30 cm in length.  The flower stem can grow to be 14 - 40 cm tall.

Flowers are cup-shaped about 1-3 cm and bloom in North America in the spring from May to June.  Berries are a bright metallic blue colour.

Typical areas to find this plant are in shaded, moist boreal forests.  This species is not found in open spaces and only grows in the shade.

Did you know...

that it takes more than 12 years for a clone to establish itself and produce its first flower?  Rhizomes start to break down and mold after about a 15 year life, but by then a large colony has probably established itself so one dying plant is not noticed.

The Earth
Laughs in Flowers

because rose bushes
have thorns,
or rejoice because
thorn bushes
have roses."

~ Abraham Lincoln ~

"I wonder if
the Daffodil,
shrinks from the
touch of frost,
And when her veins
grow stiff & still,
She dreams
that life is lost?
Ah, if she does,
how sweet a thing
Her resurrection
day in spring!

~ Emma C. Dowd ~

"Bred feeds the body, indeed, but flowers
feed also the soul."

~ The Koran ~

"If seeds in the
black earth
can turn into
such beautiful roses,
what might not
the heart of man
become in its
long journey
toward the stars?"

~ G.K. Chesterton ~

"I'd rather have
roses on my table
than  diamonds
around my neck."
