Note:   I am not an expert in the identification of plants and you should UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES rely
upon any of these images to identify edible, toxic or medicinal plants. If I have identified a plant
inaccurately,  please let me know so that the descriptions may be corrected.

Daucus carota is commonly known as "Wild Carrot, Bird's Nest" and "Bishop's Lace".  My personal favourite name for this flower that I picked by the roadside as a child is "Queen Anne's Lace" so named since the dainty flower truly does resemble lace.  The tiny red flower in the center is said to represent a drop of blood when Queen Anne pricked herself with a needles while making the lace.

Domesticated carrots are cultivars of a subspecies Daucus caota subsp. sativus.

D. carota is a biennial plant (one that takes 2 years to complete its biological lifecycle) that is well-known for its compound umbel with each umbel containing several ubellets.  It is these that give the plant its lacy appearance.

Did you know...

that naturalists say that the function of the darker flower in the center is to attract insects?

Caution -

If collecting, please keep in mind that D. carota looks very similar to Poison Hemlock.  Also, leaves can cause a chemical reaction causing skin to become hypersensitive to light known as "Phytophotodermatitis".

Did you know...

that this species is considered to be a beneficial weed and may be used as a companion plant to crops?  The USDA, however, does have it listed as a noxious weed.

Laughs in Flowers

because rose bushes
have thorns,
or rejoice because
thorn bushes
have roses."

"I wonder if
the Daffodil,
shrinks from the
touch of frost,
And when her veins
grow stiff & still,
She dreams
that life is lost?
Ah, if she does,
how sweet a thing
Her resurrection
day in spring!

~ Emma C. Dowd ~

"Bred feeds the body, indeed, but flowers
feed also the soul."

can turn into
such beautiful roses,
what might not
the heart of man
become in its
long journey
toward the stars?"

roses on my table
