Note:   I am not an expert in the identification of plants and you should UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES rely
upon any of these images to identify edible, toxic or medicinal plants. If I have identified a plant
inaccurately,  please let me know so that the descriptions may be corrected.

Rosa spp. - The term "Wild Rose" is commonly used to describe flowering shrubs within the Rosa genus some of which growing in Ontario may be:  R. acicularis (Prickly Wild Rose); R. rugosa (Large-hip Rose); and R. woodsii (Prairie Rose).  This species prefers to grow in open areas.

Rosa acicularis - Native roses have pink blossoms  5-7 cm wide that range in colour from very pale to deep tones.  They bloom around the end of June and early July.  Bushy shrubs grow to be about 1.5 m high.  Stems are densely covered with many straight, weak bristles and straight slender thorns.

It may be difficult to differentiate visually between the Rosa acicularis and the Common Wild Rose also known as the Wood Rose except for one "sharp" difference.  While R. acicularis has stems covered with small bristles and prickles, the Common Wild Rose has only a few scattered thorns usually found at stem nodes.  Contrary to its name, the Common Wild Rose is found infrequently across the boreal forest.

Common Wild Rose

Since the stems of the specimens below have a bare stem with only a slender prickle near the base, I suspect this to be a Common Wild Rose.  Photographed in Northern Ontario near Parry Sound growing in an open field beside a lake.

"I wonder if
the Daffodil,
shrinks from the
touch of frost,
And when her veins
grow stiff & still,
She dreams
that life is lost?
Ah, if she does,
how sweet a thing
Her resurrection
day in spring!
