All About Roses

Roses are woody perennial flowering plants in the Rosa genus, in the Rosaceae family.  Beware, their stems are armed with sharp thorns.

When rose blooms are left on the plant, they develop into fruits known as rose hips, although many domestic cultivars do not produce hips.  Hips contain seeds which are rich in vitamin C.

Perfumes are made from rose oil obtained from crushed rose petals.

Did you know....

that there are over 150 species of roses with thousands of hybrids?  These lovely floral specimens come in just about every colour.

Typical rose categories include:

Old Garden Roses - Bloom once a year.

Modern Garden Roses - Bloom continuously having larger blooms.  Less hardy and disease resistant.

Floribunda Roses - Floribunda roses have stems that produce cluster or large blossoms.  These are hardy roses, especially when grown from roots.  My roses are over 40 years old and bloom twice a year.

Hybrid Tea Roses - Long upright stems make these roses favourites as cut flowers.  Although the blooms are large, the plants are not very hardy.  This type of rose is typically what we think of when ordering long-stemmed roses for birthdays or valentine's day.

Grandiflora Roses - A combination of Hybrid Tea and Floribunda roses.  These roses have blooms like Hybrid Teas and the repetitive growth cycle of Floribundas.

Climbing Roses - These roses don't actually climb like vines, but have sturdy, long canes that can be trained to grow along trestles or fences.

Shrub Roses - Looking very much like buses, shrub roses grow tall and spread easily.  Blooms may be single or cabbage-like.

Groundcover Roses - With blooms not as showy, these low, spreading roses are grown to fill in large areas.

Miniature Roses - These plants are miniature versions of Hybrid Tea roses.  In my area of Canada, these roses don't do well growing outdoors.  As houseplants in containers, they bloom continuously for about 2-3 weeks.

Wild Roses - These are roses that are natural species and have not been hybridized.  These very hardy plants survive on their own often spreading and forming thickets.  Blooms are typically five-petal flowers that appear in early summer.

The Earth
Laughs in Flowers

~ Ralph Waldo
Emerson ~

"We can complain
because rose bushes
have thorns,
or rejoice because
thorn bushes
have roses."

~ Abraham Lincoln ~

"I wonder if
the Daffodil,
shrinks from the
touch of frost,
And when her veins
grow stiff & still,
She dreams
that life is lost?
Ah, if she does,
how sweet a thing
Her resurrection
day in spring!

~ Emma C. Dowd ~

"Bred feeds the body, indeed, but flowers
feed also the soul."

~ The Koran ~

"If seeds in the
black earth
can turn into
such beautiful roses,
what might not
the heart of man
become in its
long journey
toward the stars?"

~ G.K. Chesterton ~

"I'd rather have
roses on my table
than  diamonds
around my neck."
~ Emma Goldman ~

so does hope."
