Is a coconut a fruit, nut or seed?

Coconuts are referred to as all three - fruits, nuts and seeds.  Botanically, however, a coconut is a fibrous one-seeded drupe, also known as a dry drupe.

What's a drupe?

A drupe is a fruit with a hard stony covering that encloses the seed.  Examples are peach and olives.  The word "drupa" means an "overripe olive".  All drupes, including coconuts, have three layers which include the exocarp (outer layer), the mesocarp (fleshy middle layer), and the endocarp (hard, woody layer that surrounds the seed).

The green outermost layer is the exocarp.   The next layer is the fibrous husk - called the mesocarp.  The hard woody layer called the endocarp has been removed from the shells above.

The coconuts you purchase at the grocery store have had their exocarp and mesocarp removed.  What you are purchasing is the endocarp.

Nuts, Seeds & Grains

Did you know....

that of the six major plant parts, seeds are the dominant source of human calories & protein?  They are rich in complex carbohydrates and fiber and form the base of most healthy food pyramids.

Grains are the seeds of grasses - wheat, corn, oats, rice, etc.

Beans are the seeds of legumes - peas, lentils, soybeans & chickpeas.

Nuts are the seeds of trees - walnuts, pecans, etc.

Just plain seeds - sunflower, sesame, poppy, etc.

are like nuts;
many a tooth
is broken
in cracking them,
but never

with eating them."

from the tree
but their seeds
can go places -
  and wherever they go,
by their virtue,
they leave their traces."
