Thank you to Michael-Angelo's Market Place

Turmeric is a rhizomatous (mass of roots) herbaceous (having leaves & stems that die down at end of growing season) perennial (a plant that lives for more than two years) plant in the Ginger family Zingiberaceae. It is the rhizome of the Curcuma longa plant.   It is native to southwest India and called "Haldi".

Rhizomes are used fresh and boiled.  When cooked, the turmeric is ground into a deep-orange-yellow power and used as a spice in Bangladeshi, Indian or Pakistani cuisine.  It may also be use as a dye or a food additive.

Take note the pronunciation of this plant.  Many people say the name as if there were no initial "r" - Tu-mer-ic".  Turmeric may be pronounced either with or without the initial "r".

Did you know....

that turmeric paper is used for chemical analysis as an indicator for acidity and alkalinity?

Herbs & Spices

Add some herbs & spice to your life....

"Spice is life.
It depends upon
what you like...
have fun with it.
Yes, food is serious,
but you should have
fun with it."

~ Emeril Lagasse ~

Hieroglyph found
in an ancient
Egyptian tomb -

"One-quarter
of what you eat
keeps you alive.
The other
three-quarters
keeps your
doctor alive."

"But in truth,
should I meet
with gold or spices
in great quantity,
I shall remain
till I collect
as much as possible,
and for this purpose
I am proceeding
 solely
in quest of them."

~ Christopher
Columbus ~

"All that  man needs
 for health and healing
has been provided
by God in nature,
the Challenge of science
is to find it."

~ Philippus Theophrastrus Bombast that of Aureolus Paracelsus (1493-1541) ~

"The human body
heals itself
and nutrition provides
the resources
to accomplish the task."

~Roger Williams
Ph.D. (1971) ~

"The doctor
of the future
will no longer treat
the human frame
with drugs,
but rather will cure
and prevent disease
with nutrition."

~ Thomas Edison ~
