*** Warning ***

I wrestled with the option of whether or not to try to identify and place names to my fungus images.  The study of fungi is done by specialists known as a "mycologists" who have many years of education and specialize in identification.  There are many techniques used to identify a mushroom and it simply cannot be done by visual inspection alone.  Incorrectly identifying a mushroom can have deadly consequences if eaten.

While I have tried to link images with fungus names, I am but a lay person and have used books and images to try to look up, categorize and name the species.  My identification should in no way be relied upon and may be completely inaccurate!

There are many toxic mushroom "look-alikes"  that resemble edible ones.  You should UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES  rely up on any of these images to identify edible, toxic or medicinal organisms/plants.  Some mushrooms and fungi are DEADLY  poisonous and their effects do not show up until it is too late to save yourself.  YOU alone are responsible for properly identifying any mushrooms that you may be interested in.  I have attached names to images which I merely THINK resemble the species.

I am grateful for corrections to taxonomic determinations, please contact me at FreeTiiuPix

Amanita muscaria
[Fly Agaric]

Amanita muscaria is another poisonous mushroom also known as “Fly Agaric”.  Caps are 5-25 cm in width nearly round when young, becoming flat with age.  This fungus is covered with white to buff, cotton-looking patches (warts) when young, which are often washed away with rain.

Amanita muscaria var. guessowii is another variety of this species.  It is distinguished by its bright yellow and/or yellow and orange cap, rather than the typicall red.

A. muscaria is a very beautiful specimen and depicts what most people think of as a mushroom.  It is Canada’s version of the European “toadstool”.  Gills are free from the stem, close and white to cream in colour.  Stems may be 8-15 cm in height by 1-3 cm in width and are scaly at the bottom.  This species is very common and fruits on the ground in woods.

The cap of A. muscaria var. formosa is sticky when when fresh.  The shaggy stem has skirt-like rings that sometimes have a yellow tinge.

Note:  The images below (Specimen group "B") are of a very young specimen and were photographed in Northern Ontario during the summer months after an extensive period of rain.  Althouh I have labeled this specimen as an A. muscaria, one of the images clearly depicts a very wet and slippery cap. Might the specimens in group "B" be Aminata frostiana instead?  A. frostiana's colours include caps that are yellow to golden orange or combinations of scarlet or deep reddish pink.  The cap's smooth surface become slightly sticky when moist.
