Free Images of Mushrooms

Of the Tooth fungi, there are several species of Hericium.  H. abietis is common in western North America, H. erinaceus is commonly cultivated and characterized by long spines that never branch.  H. ramosum, H. coralloides and H. americanum are difficult to distinguish from each other.  While some descriptions include various branching patterns of the limbs that hold the spines, microscopic examination yields the best identification.

According to Michael Kuo of MushroomExpert.com, Hericium americanum is North America's only Hericium species with long spines and a branching fruiting body.  It is found east of the Great Plains fruiting on dead wood or live trees.

Hericium americanum is sometimes called the "Lion's Mane, Bear's Head Tooth Fungus, Monkey Head" or "The Icicle Mushroom".  Easy to spot, it resembles hanging icicles.

Look for developed branches.  When H. americanum is young it can be confused with H. erinaceus.  Fruit bodies are 5-20 cm wide and up to 25 cm long and are made up of a central thick supporting stalk that produces a series of fertile branches.  Each branch has hanging clusters of spines which turn from white to cream and finally brown.

The specimen below was photographed in late fall in northern Ontario.
