Did you know...

that the cultivation of land, the raising of crops, the feeding, breeding and raising of livestock or poultry for food, fiber and other products is called agriculture?  Another word for agriculture is "farming".  The food grown is for people and animals.

Keep in mind, however, that agriculture includes the growing of items other than food as well.  It includes things like the growing of things for fibers - like the wool from a sheep and things for beauty, such a flowers.

What is Ponding (Pluvial Flooding) vs Flooding

Ponding is caused by heavy rains that fall upon a relatively flat area like the one seen in the photographs above and below.  The falling rain is normally soaked into the ground, drained or pumped into a canal or lake.  If more rain falls than can be stored in the ground or drained, flooding called "ponding" occurs.  Ponding is the result of rainwater that pools on the surface of saturated soild, not water coming from a river or lake source.

Floods, on the other hand, occurs when water from rivers, lakes or streams overflows and runs onto fields.

Plant losses may occur in either situation.  Plants die when they are under water or when their roots sit in water saturated soil.  Some outbreaks of plant disease may occur as well.  Diseases develop from pathogens that bloom in warm, wet conditions.

Flood waters may further contain contaminants including raw sewage, manure, chemicals, heavy metals or other chemical contaminants.  Microbial pathogens that may be in the water including bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Agriculture

Agriculture is  the science or practice of farming, including the cultivation of the soil, the production of crops and the raising of livestock for food, wool and other products.

"Cultivators of the earth
are the most
valuable citizens.
They are the most
vigorous,
the most independent,
the most virtuous,
and they are tied
to their country
and wedded to its
liberty
and interests
by the most
lasting bands."

~ Thomas Jefferson ~

"There seem to be
but three ways
for a nation
to acquire wealth.
The first is by war,
as the Romans did,
 in plundering their
conquered neighbours.
This is robbery.

The second by commerce,
which is generally
cheating.

The third by agriculture,
the only honest way
wherein man receives
a real increase
of the seed thrown
into the ground,
in a kind of continual miracle, wrought by the hand of God
 in his favour,
as a reward
for his innocent life
and his virtuous industry."

~ Benjamin Franklin ~

"The diligent farmer
plants trees,
of which he himself
will never see the fruit."

~ Cicero ~

"Farming looks
mighty easy
when your plow
is a pencil,
 and you are
a thousand miles
from the corn field."

~ Dwight D.
Eisenhower ~
