What does one do with the grains they produced?  Why grind them into flour of course!  For that, a gristmill, also known as a "grist mill, corn mill" or "flour mill" was needed.

Water powered mills were typical and were built beside rivers with good water flow.  Paddle wheels were turned by the force of the water and attached to a shaft connected to the millstone.  The force caused the millstone to grind against a stationary stone and produce flour.

Later gristmill designs were gear driven where the water wheel drove a system of gears.  Having a system of gears ensured that that main shaft turned faster than the water wheel.

Did you know....

that the bottom stationary stone is fixed to the floor and is called the "bed".  The top stone is called the "runner" and is driven by the main shaft.  It is between these two stones that the grain in milled.

These images are of the historic grist mill Enfield Falls Mill and Miller's House (also known as the Treman House and Mill).  It is located in Robert H. Treman State Park in New York state, US.

The mill is a 2 1/2 story turbine powered mill that was constructed in 1839 and worked until 1917.  The mill has three runs of stones for grinding buckwheat, wheat and coarse grain.   A wonderful place to visit, the Mill is now registered on the US  National Register of Historic Places.

The gristmill replaced an earlier mill built in 1817 which burned in the 1830's.  This mill was built by Jared Treman in 1839.  The Mill was restored between 1924 & 1926 and opened to the public in 1927.

A large wooden gear (great spur wheel) turned the main shaft and the lantern pinion gears.   It was the lantern pinions that turned the upper millstones (bottom bed stones did not move).

Millstones were used to grind grain, the spacing of which (called tentering) determined the coarseness of the flour.

Agriculture

Agriculture is the science or practice of farming, including the cultivation of the soil, the production of crops and the raising of livestock for food, wool and other products.

"Cultivators of the earth
are the most
valuable citizens.
They are the most
vigorous,
the most independent
the most virtuous,
and they are tied
to their country
and wedded to its
liberty & interests
by the most
lasting bonds."

~ Thomas Jefferson ~

"There seem to be
but three ways
for a nation
to acquire wealth.
The first is by war,
as the Romans did,
 in plundering their
conquered neighbours.
This is robbery.

The second by commerce,
which is generally
cheating.

The third by agriculture,
the only honest way
wherein man receives
a real increase
of the seed thrown
into the ground,
in a kind of continual miracle, wrought by the hand of God
 in His favour,
as a reward
for his innocent life
and his virtuous industry."

~ Benjamin Franklin ~

"The diligent farmer
plants trees,
of which he himself
will never see the fruit."

~ Cicero ~

"Farming looks
mighty easy
when your plow
is a pencil,
 and you are
a thousand miles
from the corn field."

~ Dwight D.
Eisenhower ~
