Bridges are structures built to span physical obstacles.  They typically carry a road, path, railroad or canal across a river, creek, ravine, road, railroad or other obstacle.  There are many types of construction and materials used to built a bridge based upon the structure's function.  Some bridges are permanent, they may be floating or temporary, and some are movable - designed to move out of the way of boats or other traffic.

Bridges are classified according to how the forces of tension, compression, bending, torsion and shear are distributed through the structure.  Types of bridges include:  beam, truss, cantilever, arch, tied arch, suspension and cable.

Did you know...

that the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan is currently the world's longest suspension span? The George Washington Bridge in the US is the world's busiest bridge.

Bridge Image Categories

Timber (Wood)  Bridges - 28 images of wooden bridges.

A wooden or timber bridge is one that uses timber or wood as its main structural material.  Depending upon your location, wood is a relatively easy material to obtain, so it makes sense that the earliest of bridges were built using this material.  Quite often, logs were placed over rivers to allow for passage.

Covered bridges made of wood are built atop bridges to form a tunnel.

Stone Arch Bridge - 12 images of stone bridges.

Arch bridges are very common.  They were built with stones prior to iron and steel bridges were introduced.  The Roman empire built arch bridges throughout Europe and because of their very strong design, many of them are still standing today.

The most important stone in an arch bridge, is the keystone in the center of the arch.  It is this stone that holds the arch together.

Steel Bridge - 6 images.

Steel is widely used for bridge construction - especially for long span bridges, railway bridges, foot bridges and highway bridges because it is able to carry loads in tension, compression and shear.  This type of bridge is fast to build.  Steel bridges can be further categorized into beam bridges, arch bridges, cable-stayed bridges and suspension bridges.

"There are three forms
of visual art:
Painting is art to look at, sculpture is art you can
walk around,
and architecture
is art you can walk through."
