The term "communication" comes from Latin and means "to share".  There are currently many ways in which we can exchange our ideas, thoughts, messages or information, some of which include face-to-face communication, written including email, telephone, etc.  Increasing technology adds to this vast list of methods.

Cellular (cell) phones became popular and widely available in the 1990’s.  Over the past decade, the use of wireless telecommunication technology has increased significantly: more than 24 million Canadians now have cell phones. Their widespread use has resulted in cell phone communication towers, also known as “base stations” or “Base Transceiver Stations”, being placed in many communities.  Each tower creates a “cell” in a cellular network, designed to cover a wide geographic area to provide user service.

Wireless telecommunications rely on a network of cell phone towers in order to send and receive information.  Cell phone towers consists of antennas and electronic equipment which act as hubs for cell phones and local wireless networks.  When you make a call with your cell phone, your phone’s antenna connects with the nearest base station antenna. They communicate back and forth using low-power radiofrequency (RF) energy.  RF waves transfer the human voice to the base station.  The voice signals are sent to a switching center which then transfers the call to its destination.

Cell phone base stations are often free-standing towers held in place by cables or mounted on existing structures such as tall buildings, water tanks, and even trees.  The antennas need to be high enough to send and receive transmissions to cover a specific geographic area.  Base stations are typically from 50-200 feet high.  Mounted atop cell towers are antennas, one or more sets of transmitters/receivers, digital signal processors, control electronics, a GPS receiver, primary and backup electrical power sources, and lights to alert planes of the tower’s existence.

Health concerns are sometimes expressed by people who live or work near cell phone tower antennas.  The consensus of the scientific community, however, is that RF energy from cell phone towers is too low to cause adverse health effects in humans. In fact, RF exposures from cell phone towers are typically well below Health Canada 's exposure standards.

Note:  RF energy, also known as RF emissions, RF waves, or RF fields, is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum somewhere between FM radio waves and microwaves.  Like FM radio waves, microwaves, visible light, and heat, are forms of non-ionizing radiation which means they cannot cause cancer by directly damaging DNA.  Stronger types of radiation such as x-rays, gamma rays and ultraviolet light break the chemical bonds of DNA.

Just as we humans sometimes use other structures to which we adhere communication towers, this tower is also serving a dual purpose - it is being used by a large bird for nesting.  Most likely a falcon or hawk, the top of this tower supports a large nest.

Snail Mail

Some people think that the term "snail mail" came into existence with the emergence of new email technology, but in fact, the term came into use as early as the 1940's when it was used to describe slow mail delivery.

Snail mail or sometimes "smail" is used to describe letters carried by conventional postal delivery services.  While email is instant, snail mail has a lag-time between the time posted and its receipt.  This type of mail service is also known as "paper mail, postal mail, or land mail".
