What's the difference between an Alpaca and a Llama?

Although Alpacas (Vicugna pacos) are classified camelids together with camels and Llamas, they are much smaller than a Llama and not big enough to be bred to be beasts of burden.  The species closest to them is the Vicuña which is thought to be the Alpaca's wild ancestor.

Llamas are almost twice the size of an Alpaca and have a longer head. While  Llamas have long banana-shaped curved ears, Alpacas have smaller, pointed years.

Llamas have flat, level backs with a tail at the end of the back.  Alpacas, however, have slightly rounded backs with tails that slop down their backs.  Also, Alpacas also have a more consistent body colour.  According to some, Alpacas also tend to be more skittish than Llamas.

The fibers from both species are quite different.  While Llamas have a coarse outer coat over a soft inner coat, Alpacas have a fine, single coat of hair that is very soft.  Despite being much larger, Alpaca's produce more fiber per animal.

Did you know....

that the gestation period of an alpaca is between 345 and 360 days?  That is almost a year ! Their offspring are called "cria".  Cria  is the name used for all baby camelids and comes from the Spanish word "cria" which means "baby".

Did you know....

that there are two types of Alpaca that are bred for fiber - the Huacaya and the Suri.  Breeding Suri is in the minority although they have a very lustrous fine fiber with no crimp that hangs down in locks. The fleece is used for woven cloth.  More commonly bred is the hardy Huacaya that has a soft and dense fiber more sought after by the textile industry.
