The word "fowl" can refer to a bird of any kind who's meat is used for food.  Most often used to describe the domesticated chicken, it also includes birds that are hunted for game such as duck, goose, turkey and pheasant.

white goose pngAlthough there is a slight distinction between "fowl" and "poultry", most people use the terms interchangeably to mean domesticated birds raised in captivity for meat, eggs or feathers.

Did you know....

that the word "clutch" means the eggs produced by an animal at a single time?  Chickens usually lay one egg a day during the summer months.  As winter comes and the days shorten, the hen will skip some days or stop laying eggs until the spring.   If the eggs are not removed, a hen usually lays several eggs and then sits on them until they hatch.

Did you also know....

that rooster, cockerel, hen and pullet are all terms used to describe chickens?

An adult male chicken is called a "Cock" (in the United Kingdom, Ireland & Australia) but called a "Rooster" in Canada and the US.  Males that are under a year old are called "Cockerels".

Females over a year old are called "Hens" while younger females are called "Pullets".

Babies are called "Chicks".

Agriculture

Agriculture is  the science or practice of farming, including the cultivation of the soil, the production of crops and the raising of livestock for food, wool and other products.

"Cultivators of the earth
are the most
valuable citizens.
They are the most
vigorous,
the most independent,
the most virtuous,
and they are tied
to their country
and wedded to its
liberty
and interests
by the most
lasting bands."

~ Thomas Jefferson ~

"There seem to be
but three ways
for a nation
to acquire wealth.
The first is by war,
as the Romans did,
 in plundering their
conquered neighbours.
This is robbery.

The second by commerce,
which is generally
cheating.

The third by agriculture,
the only honest way
wherein man receives
a real increase
of the seed thrown
into the ground,
in a kind of continual miracle, wrought by the hand of God
 in his favour,
as a reward
for his innocent life
and his virtuous industry."

~ Benjamin Franklin ~

"The diligent farmer
plants trees,
of which he himself
will never see the fruit."

~ Cicero ~

"Farming looks
mighty easy
when your plow
is a pencil,
 and you are
a thousand miles
from the corn field."

~ Dwight D.
Eisenhower ~
