Free images Related to Power & Energy - Fire

Note on large files:  Very large files may be bigger than your screen.

After the sun, fire is the oldest form of energy used by man.  It is a chemical process which needs the following three things:  oxygen, heat and fuel.  Only if all three of these elements are present can a fire start or continue to burn.

The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Section 921 defines fire as "A rapid oxidation process, which is a chemical reaction resulting in the evolution of light and heat in varying intensities.

  Did you know....

that the Heat Release Rate (HRR) is a measurement of the rate at which fire release energy - also known as power.  HRR is measured in units of Watts (W).  When measuring a large fire, HRR may also be measured in Kilowatts (equal to 1,000 Watts) or Megawatts (equal to 1,000,000 Watts).  Source:  Fire.Gov

  Did you know....

that burning things causes a chemical reaction that produces heat?  When something is burnt, thermal energy is released.  This energy is also measured in calories.  As an example, when you make a campfire and burn some wood, each burnt gram of wood releases 3000 calories.

By way of comparison, a burnt apple, which has less chemical bonds, only releases 600 calories.
