Free Images of Lichen
Cladonia cristatella ?

*** Warning ***

Although there aren't many lichen that are poisonous, there are some that are high in vulpinic or usnic acid and they are toxic.

While I have tried to link images with lichen names, I am not a specialist in this field.  I have used books and images to try to look up, categorize and name the various species.  My identification should in no way be relied upon as accurate. YOU alone are responsible for properly identifying any lichen that you may be interested in.  I have attached names to images which I merely THINK resemble the species.

I am grateful for corrections to taxonomic determinations, please contact me at FreeTiiuPix

One of the first lichen that children can easily recognize is the common "British Soldier Lichen", also known as "Matchstick Moss".  The names come from its resemblance to the red hats worn by British troops during the American Revolutionary war or to that of a matchstick.  This red portion of the lichen plant is the sexual fruiting structure of the plant, called the "apothecia".

There are several Cladonia species that look very similar.  For example, Cladonia deformis, although it has a well-defined "cup" shape with its red caps surrounding the cup rim.  Cladonia floerkeana and Cladonia cristatella look to in my layman's view almost identical.  I am going to assume that the specimens below are that of Cladonia cristatella on the basis that many local naturalists report them in the area.

Cladonia cristatella are considered "club" lichen, but they have hollow, awl-shaped clubs - no cups.  They lack powdery soredia with clubs that are weakly branched in the upper part.  There are small lobes (squamules) at the base of the plant.  My concern with calling these specimens C. cristatella are the few fully formed cups amongst the lichen.  Is my identification incorrect?  or is there a different species in the same area?

Lovely Lichens &
Magnificent Mosses

Lichens - Two types of organisms living together - a fungus and an alga.  The fungus makes the body that protects the alga, and the alga provides the food for the fungus.

Thoreau once wrote:  "I find myself inspecting little granules as it were on the bark of trees - little shields or apothecia springing from a thallus - such is the mood of my mind - and I call it studying.

Classification -

Lichens were problematic for biological classification but are now classified as fungi under the genus and species of the host fungus.
