Located near West Bay on the Caribbean island of Grand Cayman, there is a tiny district called "Hell". It is a small area about half the size of a football field. What is unique about this place are the ancient, black, sharp limestone formations. Although the peaks look like they could be volcanic, they are in fact made of limestone. There is a coating of algae upon the white rock that secrets acid and is eroding the rock into the shapes you see.

Sinage at the site explains that the sharp gray coloured, pinnacled surface of the dolostone referred to as "phytokarst", is caused by weathering of the rock by acid rain and its consumption by carbonate-loving organisms.

Sedimentary Rock

In Canada ’s east-central portion of the province of Alberta, there is an area known as the “Badlands ”.  Once a tropical home to plants and dinosaurs millions of years ago, it is now an area with bedrock made of sedimentary rocks.  These are rocks that have eroded and moved from one place to another by water, ice, wind and gravity.   The sediment is buried, compacted and cemented together to form sedimentary rocks.

Melting glaciers from the ice age have left many geological formations such as the sandstone pillars shaped by wind and water erosion known as “Hoodoos”.  Other names given to these rock formations are “fairy chimneys” and “earth pyramids”.  The fragile sandstone sits on a thick base of shale and is capped by a large stone.  Some of these formations are over 23 feet in height.  The shapes we see now are the result of millions of years of wind and water erosion.

Caves

Most of the Caribbean islands are part of a large volcanic mountain chain that lies along the floor of the Caribbean Sea and thus are volcanic in origin.  Many islands have a volcanic peak or mountainous interior.

Many of the islands are covered with a limestone plateau.  When water erodes through the limestone, a cave is formed.  When visiting the Caribbean, you will find many filled with large chambers, lakes, streams and waterfalls.

“There is a serene
and settled majesty
to woodland scenery
that enters into
the soul and delights
and elevates it,
and fills it with
noble inclinations.”

~ Washington Irving ~

“I went to the woods
because I wished
to live deliberately,
to front only
t he essential facts
of life and see
if I could not learn
what it had to teach,
and not,
when I came to die,
discover that I
had not lived.”

~ Henry Davie
