The Canadian Rockies are the Canadian portion of the North American Rocky Mountain range and extend through both Alberta and British Columbia provinces.  Composed of layers of sedimentary limestone and shale rock that is heavily glaciated, the area offers spectacular views due to very jagged mountains and valleys.  There are five National Parks within the Canadian Rockies.  Four of these -- Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho -- together with British Columbia's Hamber, Mount Assiniboine and Mount Robson Provincial Parks,  make up the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site.  (Waterton Ntl. Park is the fifth Park in the area but does not connect to the others.)

Other scenic points of interest include:  The Town of Banff, the Village of Lake Louise, Lake Moraine, Towns of Jasper, Canmore, Waterton and Golden.

  Did you know....

that although the Canadian Rockies are on average not as high as the American Rockies, the Canadian Rockies have a more jagged appearance due to heavy glaciation.  While the Canadian Rockies are composed of layered sedimentary rock like limestones and shales, the America Rockies are mainly made of metamorphic and igenous rock.

Since the temperature of the Canadian Rockies is lower and there is greater percipitation, the valleys contain moister soil and are home to much vegetation and wildlife.  There are more glaciers and therefore rivers and lakes.

Black bear eating berries from bush.

Black Bear - 1
This lovely fellow was eating berries along the side of the Icefields Parkway.
He didn't eat them one by one as I imagined, instead, he rapdily "vacummed" each branch loudly
and swallowed not only the berries, but the leaves and bits of the branch as well.
Tsk tsk table manners!

Scenery & Landscapes

“There is a serene
and settled majesty
to woodland scenery
that enters into
the soul and delights
and elevates it,
and fills it with
noble inclinations.”

~ Washington Irving ~

“I went to the woods
because I wished
to live deliberately,
to front only
t he essential facts
of life and see
if I could not learn
what it had to teach,
and not,
when I came to die,
discover that I
had not lived.”

~ Henry Davie
Thoreau ~

“Keep your faith
in all beautiful things.
In the sun
when it is hidden.
In the spring
when it is gone.”

~ Roy Rolfe
Gilson ~
