What are Chatter Marks?

Glaciers are large, dense bodies of ice that move under their own weight. As they flow over bedrock, they pick up bits of rock.  This is known as "plucking".  As the ice and rock fragments move over bedrock, they act like sandpaper, smoothing the bedrock below.  Often, however, large scratches called "glacial striations" are created.  Examining the direction of the striations tells geologists in which direction the glacier moved.

But what about chatter marks?  Chatter marks are crescent-shaped, or horseshoe-shaped scratches or fractures in bedrock, similar to striations.  They are formed under the glacier by the pressure and impact of rocks or boulders being dragged.  The irregular rolling or sliding of the rock as it is repeatedly caught and released as it moves results in chatter marks.

The term "chatter" comes from the sound a carpenter's chisel makes as it chips and carves a piece of wood.  Chatter marks are typically in a nested row oriented at right angles in the direction of glacial movement.

Scenery & Landscapes

“There is a serene
and settled majesty
to woodland scenery
that enters into
the soul and delights
and elevates it,
and fills it with
noble inclinations.”

~ Washington Irving ~

“I went to the woods
because I wished
to live deliberately,
to front only
t he essential facts
of life and see
if I could not learn
what it had to teach,
and not,
when I came to die,
discover that I
had not lived.”

~ Henry Davie
Thoreau ~

“Keep your faith
in all beautiful things.
In the sun
when it is hidden.
In the spring
when it is gone.”

~ Roy Rolfe
