Lincoln Park

When the city of Chicago was incorporated in 1837, it chose the motto "Urbs in Horto" which in Latin means "City in a Garden".  The city has over 570 parks with more than 8,000 acres of municipal parkland.  Lincoln Park is a community area in the North Side of Chicago.  It is currently a park along Chicago's lakefront and was named after Abraham Lincoln.  I was told that Lincoln Park is the second most visited park in the United States.   It was originally a cemetery until the 1860's.  Although most of the graves have been relocated, recent construction (1998) revealed bodies left over from the nineteenth century.

Lincoln Park Zoo

Within the park one will find the Lincoln Park Zoo.  What an amazing place!  It is a privately managed institution that depends primarily on the support of its visitors, members and donors to remain open and free every day.  As their website says, the "Lincoln Park Zoo is a world of wildlife in the shadow of skyscrapers".

Adelor lion Lincoln Park Zoo entranceThe zoo is located in Chicago's historic Lincoln Park neighborhood.  Here, amongst the zoo's 49 acres on Chicago's lakefront, one can truly forget that you are smack dab in the middle of a bustling city.  One can find architectural treasures, gardens and award-winning, progressively-designed animal habitats.

The zoo was founded in 1868, making it one of the oldest zoos in the United States.  It is also one of a few free admission zoos in the United States with an estimated 3.5 million visitors per year.  The LP zoo is home to more than 1,100 mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, thousands of fish and insects.  The zoo's collection represents approximately 200 different species of animals.

Adelor (1993-2012) was one of the zoo's most popular inhabitants living at the zoo from 1995 till 2012.  In remembrance of this very beloved lion, Zina L. Berman donated this statue of him for the zoo's entrance at the East Gate. The plaque reads:  "Lincoln Park Zoo's Beloved Lion - For all who loved him."

The East Gate Plaza was made possible through the generosity of The Women's Board of The Lincoln Park Zoological Society in July 2001.  The ornamental arch is dedicated in loving memory of Esther Danielsen.

Scenery & Landscapes

“There is a serene
and settled majesty
to woodland scenery
that enters into
the soul and delights
and elevates it,
and fills it with
noble inclinations.”

~ Washington Irving ~

“I went to the woods
because I wished
to live deliberately,
to front only
t he essential facts
of life and see
if I could not learn
what it had to teach,
and not,
when I came to die,
discover that I
had not lived.”

~ Henry Davie
Thoreau ~

“Keep your faith
in all beautiful things.
In the sun
when it is hidden.
In the spring
when it is gone.”
