The Wrigley Building is located at 400-410 North Michigan Avenue across the street from the Tribune Tower on the Magnificent Mile.  It is made up of two connected towers.  It was originally built to house the corporate headquarters of the Wrigley Company.  Designed by the architectural firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, the 425 foot building was completed in 1921 and its north tower in 1924.  The south tower has 30 stores, while the north has 21.  The building is easily recognized by its clock which has faces pointing in all directions.

The Merchandise Mart

Located in the Near North Side of Chicago, the Merchandise Mart opened in 1930 and, while only 18 stories tall, was the largest building in the world based on 4,000,000 square feet of floor space.  The Merch Mart as it is sometimes known, was built by Marshall Field & Co. and later owned by the Kennedy family for over 50 years.  This commercial building is currently home to shopping, the Illinois Institute of Art and the Chicago Tech Startup Center.  The public can shop in its Design Center showrooms and attend trade shows.

The Willis Tower

The Chicago skyline boasts four of the six tallest buildings in America:  The Willis Tower (previously called the Sears Tower ) #1, the Trump Tower #2, The Aon Center #5 and the John Hancock Center #6.

The Willis Tower was formerly known as The Sears Tower and The Sears Building. It is located at 233 South Wacker Drive. Built by the same architects and engineers that first built the John Hancock Center a few blocks away, this building was constructed with a revolutionary construction method – the bundled tube design  - which is a series of nine tubes, bound together. The shortest tubes are 50 stores, the 2nd set are 66, the third set 90, and the final tube is 110 stories.  Construction began in 1970 and was completed in 1974.  At its highest point, the building is 1,729 feet high.  This building was the tallest building in the world from 1973 to 1996.

“There is a serene
and settled majesty
to woodland scenery
that enters into
the soul and delights
and elevates it,
and fills it with

“I went to the woods
because I wished
to live deliberately,
to front only
t he essential facts
of life and see
if I could not learn
what it had to teach,
and not,
when I came to die,
discover that I
had not lived.”
