     Navy Pier

The Navy Pier is 3,000 feet long and was originally built to serve as warehousing, a cargo facility for lake freighter, and for docking space for passenger steamers.  It now houses retail stores, restaurants, museums, exhibition halls and auditoriums.

Did you know....

that the Navy Pier's 150 foot Ferris wheel is one of the most visited landmarks in the Midwest?  Chicago was the first city in the world to ever erect a Ferris wheel!

Chicago's Bridges

Chicago began as a busy water route.  Movable bridges were necessary to accommodate land and water traffic.  The first bridges built were floating swing bridges, followed by center pier swing bridges, and finally the "Chicago type" fixed trunnion, double leaf, bascule bridge.

Learn more about the history of Chicago's bridges by taking one of the many boat tours that run along the Chicago river offering guided architectural tours.

Defense plaque on DuSable Bridge

In 1928, sculptures by James Earle Fraser and Henry Hering that depicted scenes from Chicago's history were added to the walls of the four bridge houses of the DuSable Bridge.  The one above is named "Defense" by Hering which depicts Ensign George Ronan in a scene from a notorious and controversial event in Chicago history - the "Fort Dearborn Massacre" during the War of 1812.

Below the sculpture a plaque reads:

"Defense - Fort Dearborn stood almost on this spot.  After an heroic defense in eighteen hundred and twelve the garrison together with women and children was forced to evacuate the fort led forth by Captain Wells, they were brutally massacred by the Indians.  They will be cherished as martyrs in our early history."

A plaque on the bridge reads as follows:

"Chicago River:  This river, originally flowing eastward from the prairie home lands of the Potawatomi and other Indian tribes, into Lake Michigan, linked the waters of the Atlantic, the St. Lawrence and the Great Lakes with those of the Illinois, the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico.  From 1673, commerce and civilization followed this natural waterway from the seaboard to the heart of the continent.

The strategic importance to early American development of the junction of the Chicago river and Lake Michigan led to the establishment here of Fort Dearborn and to the founding of the city of Chicago.

Erected in 1953 to the memory of those pioneers who plied this water route.

Scenery & Landscapes

“There is a serene
and settled majesty
to woodland scenery
that enters into
the soul and delights
and elevates it,
and fills it with
noble inclinations.”

~ Washington Irving ~

“I went to the woods
because I wished
to live deliberately,
to front only
t he essential facts
of life and see
if I could not learn
what it had to teach,
and not,
when I came to die,
discover that I
had not lived.”

~ Henry David
Thoreau ~

“Keep your faith
in all beautiful things.
In the sun
when it is hidden.
In the spring
when it is gone.”
