Free Images of Puerto Rico - El Yunque National Forest

Note on large files: Very large files may be bigger than your screen.

El Yunque National Forest, was previously known as the Luquillo National Forest and the Caribbean National Forest.  It is the only tropical rain forest in the United States National forest system.

Located in northeastern Puerto Rico , the 28,000 acres of forest sits on the slopes of the Sierra de Luquillo mountains.  Trade winds from the Atlantic Ocean crash into the mountains resulting in rainfall in excess of 240 inches per year.  This process is called "orographic lift" and causes the great downpours and constant clouds in the area.

If you are ever lucky enough to visit Puerto Rico, be sure to visit the forest, located just 20 miles to the east of the San Juan Metroplex and begin your trip at the El Portal Rain Forest Center.  Various exhibits and a film will introduce you to the area, the plants and animals of the rain forest.  Learn about the importance of and threats to rain forests around the world.

Next, take the winding road to the top of the mountain and view the lush vegetation and stunning vistas.  If your young and healthy, enjoy the winding hiking trails and cool mountainous setting.

Please keep in mind that the average temperature in the forest is several degrees lower than that at sea level.  The high humidity will make you sweat profusely…remember to bring water!

The Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a species of flowering tree in the Mulberry family (Moraceae). It grows readily in the tropical rainforest.

The Breadfruit name comes from the texture of the cooked ripe fruit.  It is a good source of carbohydrates and vitamins and tastes similar to a potato.

Scenery & Landscapes

“There is a serene
and settled majesty
to woodland scenery
that enters into
the soul and delights
and elevates it,
and fills it with
noble inclinations.”

~ Washington Irving ~

“I went to the woods
because I wished
to live deliberately,
to front only
t he essential facts
of life and see
if I could not learn
what it had to teach,
and not,
when I came to die,
discover that I
had not lived.”

~ Henry David
Thoreau ~

“Keep your faith
in all beautiful things.
In the sun
when it is hidden.
In the spring
when it is gone.”

~ Roy Rolfe
